I got my hair cut yesterday and stuck around to take a picture of Shady (not his real name but the one he goes by) working on his next customer, Vanston. Shady's on 4th is a one-chair, one person operation located in his home. Shady has been cutting hair for over 30 years and has lived in southern Oregon even longer. He grew up in Orange County during the 1960's where he lived a California kid's dream life - playing baseball and surfing. He no longer surfs or plays baseball but he and I do go out and play catch occasionally. He is also a rabid skier - he hit the slopes over 80 times last winter and just bought his Mt. Ashland ski pass for the upcoming season.
Ashland, Oregon is a town of 21,000 that has a lot in common with other small towns across America. It also has qualities that make it truly unique. Home of the Oregon Shakespeare Festival and Southern Oregon University, people from various backgrounds and places have chosen to call Ashland home. As a photographer, I thought it would be a worthwhile project to document the varied aspects of Life in Ashland.
