Paulina Lake & Falls

During our stay at Odell Lake, we took a side trip to Paulina Lake and Newberry National Volcanic Monument. The lake sits in Newberry Crater which was created 500,000 years ago by volcanic eruptions and is located 6,350 feet (1,940 m) above sea level.  The overview where I was standing to take this picture is at 7,984 feet and offered a spectacular 360 degree view of central Oregon forest wilderness.

Paulina Falls are located downstream from Paulina Lake, which drains into Paulina Creek.  There are actually two falls, the other one out of the picture to the right.  However, this particular vantage point on the trail did not offer a clear view of both.  If you look closely, you can see a couple of people near the top of the falls, which will give you an idea of scale.  The water cascades down 80 feet from where they are standing.
